Dearson was started by brothers Roy and Arthur Grimes 40 years ago and has established a strong and loyal base of satisfied customers. However, just like all manufacturers, Dearson felt the effects of the recession.

Being a small and dynamic company, Dearson was able to be responsive to the economic situation and to make the changes necessary to take the company forward. Rich in creativity, and boasting a wide range of engineering and tooling skills, Dearson were in a great position to diversify.

When a customer bought some small tungsten carbide rasp blades to Dearson, asking if they could be re sharpened, Roy Grimes, engineering manager, was happy to help. The blades were sharpened, but that was only the beginning. Every so often, the customer would return with blades for sharpening. The blades were for use in Equine dentistry, and were only of use while sharp. Roy Grimes began to ask himself how the blades could be improved. How could they be made to be sharper and to stay sharp for longer? Through experimenting with different grades of carbide and form angles, Dearson was able to produce their own range of blades. The Dearson range have none of the problems which other blades may have, as they are lighter, less brittle, and stay sharper for longer. The method of re sharpening which Dearson use is also superior to other methods available, as it removes less of the blade, giving a longer product life.

Dearson have now been making equine dentistry tools since 2007, and have been in a process of constant product development and improvement.  Dearson’s extensive engineering experience, combined with a fresh and creative approach to problem solving for the equine dentistry industry has seen the launch of products which are already changing the way in which equine dentists work. Taking every positive element of tools already available, and solving problems facing equine dentists, Dearson have been able to forge a reputation as one of the world’s top quality producers of equine dentistry instruments.

Embracing change and enjoying a challenge has bought Dearson through a difficult time and opened the door to an exciting new avenue of business.
